Supporting Malaysia's Safe Sport Efforts Through Focal Point Training

Safe Sport Commission Singapore supports Malaysia’s Safe Sport Focal Point Workshop to strengthen regional collaboration on safeguarding and athlete welfare.

Safe Sport Commission Singapore supported the delivery of the Safe Sport Focal Point Workshop (Series 1/2026) in Malaysia, organised by Majlis Sukan Negara Malaysia.

The workshop marks a meaningful step in strengthening collaboration between Singapore and Malaysia in advancing Safe Sport efforts. Bringing together representatives from national sports associations, state sports councils, and key stakeholders, the workshop supports Malaysia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen safeguarding structures and reinforce its commitment to athlete welfare and protection.

Anchored on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Safe Sport framework, the workshop focused on practical application beyond foundational concepts. Drawing from Singapore’s experience, sessions explored how safeguarding principles can be adapted across different organisational contexts.

Key areas covered include:

  • Implementing safeguarding policies into practices

  • Identifying and prioritising environmental and organisational risk factors

  • Strengthening clarity of roles and responsibilities within the Focal Point function

  • Building confidence in recognising, responding to, and reporting safeguarding concerns

Participants engaged in case-based discussions and applied learning activities, allowing for practical insights and cross-organisation exchange.

Advancing Regional Collaboration

This engagement reflects growing momentum for safeguarding in sport across the ASEAN region. Cross-border collaboration remains key in accelerating progress by enabling the sharing of knowledge and practical approaches, particularly across systems at different stages of development.

The Safe Sport Focal Point Workshop is an important step in building a network of trained safeguarding representatives within Malaysia’s sport system. These individuals play a critical role in supporting the implementation of safeguarding policies and ensuring that appropriate mechanisms are in place to protect all participants.

As efforts continue to evolve, sustained collaboration, continuous learning, and practical application will be key to strengthening Safe Sport systems across the region.
